The existence of Anglers has been noticed by Government and Sea Anglers now have the whole hearted support of the Fisheries Minister, Ben Bradshaw. Importantly, the Bradley Report, DEFRA’s recent policy document, on the management of sea fisheries which recommends positive support for the Sport.
Odd then, that at a time when Sea Anglers are being recognized as a major influence with considerable spending power, that DEFRA should be licencing a Dump Site which is having a profound and devastating effect on a major Sea Angling Venue. Compare how DEFRA is treating Whitsand Bay to what is happening elsewhere in the world in the promotion of recreational angling.

The legalilty of this dumping is an interesting question. It is understood that the conditions of recent licence granted to the MOD from DEFRA only allow the dumping of silt and no man made waste. The photographic evidence elsewhere on this site plainly illustrates that this is not the case..

DEFRA however seem mightily unwilling to enforce the conditions of the licence and appear to be trying to pass the buck to the Environment Agency. The Environment agency are failing to live up to their brief of protecting and improving the Environment.

Out of sight is out of mind when the environment is below the surface of the sea it would seem! It will be seen elsewhere that the contaminants make their way inshore to Polhawn Cove; a beach much loved and much used for Generations by the Local community.

Ask yourself this question - would you still eat Shellfish from Polhawn Cove (which only a few years ago could be gathered safely in and eaten in confidence)?
