On the 1 September
2004 Cornwall County Council
published a consultation document seeking views on proposals
to establish a 'No Take Zone (NTZ)' in
Whitsand Bay around the James Eagan Layne
wreck and the Scylla artificial reef.
A small group of Local Anglers
created a web site to publicise the issues surrounding the proposal
and seek support from fellow Anglers and other interested parties to
allow angling in the area to continue. Generations of local people
and visitors alike have fished Whitsand Bay and we believed it
morally wrong to allow external commercial interests, a few
academics or other self interest groups to impinge what we consider
to be our basic and ancient right to fish under common law
pre-dating Magna Carta.
The proposal represented a
serious threat to Sea
Angling, Inshore
Fisherman, Tourism, Hotels and Local Shops. It
did not recognise
the economic and social benefits that
Angling brings to the South West.
After a long campaign the
proposal is currently held in obeyance. This section of the site is
serves to represent an archive
of this issue and maintain on record the statements made at the time
by various officials.
