Rame Public Meeting: Thumbs down to restricted access at Whitsand Bay
- No to no take zones-

Local Rame County Councillor Mrs Sheryll Murray who campaigned for an extension to the no-take zone consultation process also brought the County Council 'Big guns' to an open public meeting at Fourlanesend Primary School near Maker last night. Hundreds of local people packed the event at what was a charged and open debate.

Following the meeting Cllr Mrs Sheryll Murray commented:

"Any further discussion of a no-take zone at Whitsand Bay must now stop. There is no evidence and no local support in favour of such a scheme.  I was determined that the consultation process should be frank and fair and that all arguments should be put.

Local people last night from all sections of the community rightly spoke with one voice. There was almost unanimous opposition to any suggestion of restricted access to Whitsand Bay. Following the meeting I will be demanding that the consultation process is now suspended and no further action taken.

The County Council must now take notice and abide by the views expressed at this important meeting."

Local Parliamentary spokesman Ashley Gray who also attended the meeting added:

"The various cases were put and the passionate response form local people must now put an end to the no-take zone red herring. Cllr. Murray has done an outstanding job in ensuring that the County Council is now well aware of the strength of feeling on this issue of local people.

The real disgrace is that DEFRA issued a licence that has allowed 500,000 tons of silt to be dumped at Whitsand Bay. Four years ago I joined local fisherman and divers and visited the Raft project. Cllr Murray and I raised concerns then over the licence to dump. DEFRA must now carry out an environmental impact assessment on the damage done to the marine ecosystem; the time has come for Whitsand Bay to become a 'no dump zone'.
