For thousands of years Man has fished the waters of Whitsand Bay, gleaned Shellfish from the rocks and shallows and trapped Crustaceans, secure in the knowledge that the Bay would not only provide for him, but that the species taken from the Bay would be wholesome and clean food.

Although shallow and exposed to wind from nearly every direction but northwest through to northeast, Whitsand Bay was for countless generations, a sustainable fishery with each Species being caught and harvested in its Season.

The great surf beaches of the Bay became nationally famous for the quality of their Bass Fishing throughout the summer months and on into late autumn. Winter saw the Bass replaced by the inshore migration of Whiting and a reasonable run of Codling.

Post 1960, the increase and relative ease of small boat ownership brought with it an increase of interest in inshore boat angling. Plymouth Sound and Whitsand Bay were among the leading venues in the Country for this developing branch of the sport, which reached its peak in the late 1970’s. Ease of access and easily reached shelter in the event of bad weather developing made Whitsand Bay a safe and popular area for boat owning Anglers.

Shore Anglers continued to enjoy the wide diversity of Angling available to them and Holidaymakers visited the Rame Peninsula year after year to enjoy the Sport that the area offered them.
