05 -Colin Breed takes Campaign to EU
Colin Breed, Liberal Democrat MP for South East Cornwall has taken
the campaign to stop dumping at Whitsand Bay to the European Union.
Colin Breed raised the issue with both the EU Commissioner for
Fisheries and Maritime Affairs and the EU Commissioner for the
Environment in a meeting in Brussels on Monday.
“I have taken the fight to stop dumping at Whitsand Bay to European
level. While the EU cannot tell an individual country what to do, I
am hopeful that together we can put pressure on DEFRA to make the
right decisions over water management systems.
“We are exploring the possibility of restraining or abolishing the
dumping at Whitsand Bay through the Water framework directive. There
is new legislation coming in over the next few years to bolster this
directive and make it illegal to dump waste at a site such as
Whitsand Bay.
“In the meantime I will continue to oppose the dumping and challenge
DEFRA over the terrible impact it has on the local eco-system.”
