Unanimous Support to Protect
the Marine Environment as Dumping Resumes
There was
unanimous support in a
bid to protect the Marine Environment in Whitsand Bay at a meeting
of Caradon Council last week.
Cllr John Crago of Torpoint, Chairman of caradon Council proposed
the recommendation from the Planning and Local Economy Panel which
was seconded by Conservative PPC and Caradon councillor for
Millbrook Sheryll Murray.
An additional request that the License issued to the Cattwater
Harbour Commissioners be suspended pending full monitoring of the
disposal operations was proposed by Sheryll Murray and included in
the recommendation.
Sheryll Murray said " I am delighted that Caradon Councillors showed
full support for the protection of our beautiful Whitsand Bay. It is
sad that the government is carrying out disposal operations in this
area and the only justification they can provide is that the site
has been used for centuries. My addition to the recommendation was
based on reports that I had received locally that the vessels used
to transport the dredged materials were not tipping in the correct
SE Corner of the disposal site and until operations are monitored
with each vessel carrying an independent observer, I am not happy
for any further disposal to continue.
This area is of vital importance to the economy of Caradon and it is
totally unacceptable to justify disposal of waste at sea just
because it is out of the view of the public.
I pay tribute to Dave Peake, the ex police diver who has tirelessly
campaigned to protect the marine environment in Whitsand Bay and
call on the Minister to make sure the recommendation from Caradon is
carried out. I will be keeping a close eye on this situation and
raising the issue with our Shadow Minister Bill Wiggin MP who has
already questioned the Minister in parliament on the subject"
